Increased weight on heavy transformer no challenge for Albacor Shipping (USA) Inc.

Jan 16, 2012

Albacor Shipping (USA) Inc, through their branch in Banning, CA, was involved in a very unique transportation project of one Transformer 42 x 12 x 15’11 feet from the Port of Newark, NJ to Cranberry, PA.

Over one year was spent investigating the railroad clearance from Newark, NJ to the nearest rail siding in Mars, PA. With only three weeks prior to the arrival at the port, Albacor were notified that the weight of the valuable transformer had increased from 585,000 Lbs to 655,000 Lbs. The rail car therefore had to be changed from a 12 axle to a 20 axle rail car on very short notice.

The transformer arrived in Newark on MV Hanjin Monaco from Korea and was offloaded by a floating barge crane and brought to berth to be set there onto the rail car.

In addition to organizing this very special rail car Albacor also had to arrange for a special insurance in the amount of $3,650,000.00 to cover the rail car and caboose.

Despite all those unexpected additional challenges, Albacor was able to complete the job on time to the satisfaction of the manufacturer.
